Bayard Rustin
Behind the Scenes of Civil Rights & Gay Rights
We will go behind-the-scenes of the civil rights movement as local arts educator John Doyle dramatically depicts the character of Bayard Rustin during this live performance. Bayard Rustin was a prominent strategist within the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and worked alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. in the struggle for Civil Rights. However, he was often behind-the-scenes partly due to his sexual identity as a gay man. Rustin became known as a pacifist who advocated for non-violent resistance. After the performance there will be an opportunity for thought-provoking discussion on the history of civil rights as well as ideas and inspiration related to the ongoing work towards equality. Sponsored by the Harvard Club's Race Working Club.
